Kandungan kimia jintan hitam terdiri dari minyak atsiri, minyak lemak, d-limonena, simena, glukosida, saponin, zat pahit, jigelin, nigelon, dan timokonon. Berbagai kandungan ini didapat dari biji jintan hitam.

Untuk mendapatkan khasiat jintan hitam, bisa dilakukan dengan dua cara. Cara pertama adalah untuk pengobatan luar dengan menghaluskan bijinya.

Cara kedua adalah dengan merebus biji atau bubuk jintan hitam dan dicampur bahan lain, lalu diminum. Untuk pemakaian luar, biasanya digunakan guna mengobati radang selaput lendir hidung (rhinitis), difteri (dioleskan ke seluruh tubuh), batuk rejan (dioleskan di dada dan leher), dan influenza.

Penggunaan jintan hitam dengan cara kedua adalah untuk pengobatan sembelit, disentri, gonorrhoea, batuk, digigit ular, keracunan jamur, radang lambung dan usus, serta muntah-muntah. Dalam pengobatan cacar air, 1 sendok teh jintan hitam dihaluskan bersama sebuah labu siam, 5 gram pinang, 3 lembar daun sirih, 1 siung bawang merah, 5 gram bangle, dan sebatang serai. Setelah itu, dicampur air masak dan disaring. Airnya diminum sehari tiga kali sebanyak tiga sendok makan. (wed )
